WFE Costume Designer Jacqueline West Talks About Working with Rob
Jacqueline West: It was a treat working with them both. Reese was lovely, collaborative and game about wearing all the very slinky and revealing performance costumes and the very bare thirties gowns and had the perfect body to make them all look alluring. We watched thirties films together and she studied the film goddesses of the era and really got the body language down perfectly. She’s a fabulous actress. It’s wonderful working with good actors! Rob was wonderful. I’d only seen him as a very pale vampire. It was so much fun to see how manly and handsome and period he could become in thirties working class “Brother Can You Spare a Dime” roustabout clothes. He too is very serious about his acting and wore them so well and managed to be so of the period.

The other day I found myself standing in front of a rack of princess costumes at the Disney Store. We set out to find a last minute costume for Baby E, and the lady at the Sunglass Hut directed us there after we failed to find the pop-up Halloween store in the mall. “They have a ton of princess costumes on clearance!” she gushed. As we left the store I turned to Anthony and grimaced. “We’re not going to dress her as a princess, right?” “No fucking way,” he agreed. We bought a Winnie the Pooh costume for $12.
Moments like these have gotten me thinking a lot about the rigidity of predetermined gender roles, and the expectations and ideals we place on girls and women before they even learn how to talk. Every time I shuffle through the baby section at Target I’m horrified by the clothing options. Ruffles, lace, bows, flowers, pink pink pink pink pink. You’d be shocked at the struggle I’ve had to find jeans for my daughter that don’t have shimmery hearts on the ass. She is 11 months old.
It’s when I’m standing in front of a rack of tiny t-shirts that declare “Princess!” across the chest, or a pile of Cinderella costumes in 3-12 month sizes, that I say a silent prayer of thanks for Kristen Stewart. Yes, the twitchy girl from Twilight who never smiles. And yes, I like both those things about her…even though she’s not that twitchy and she actually smiles quite a lot. Trust me, it’s my job to know these things.

SayWhatNews: Sarah, you know I have to ask about "Twilight". You play Renee Dwyer, Bella Swan's mother. Had you read the books before you got the role? And how did you learn about the role of Bella's mom?
SayWhatNews: Sarah, you know I have to ask about "Twilight". You play Renee Dwyer, Bella Swan's mother. Had you read the books before you got the role? And how did you learn about the role of Bella's mom?
Sarah: I read Twilight because Catherine Hardwicke asked me to. I loved the first book but have to admit that I was under-whelmed about the character of Renee. It was Catherine who convinced me that there was more to her. She grew on me as the movies went on, but I still find her lack of presence in Bella’s life very annoying.
SayWhatNews: Speaking of Renee's lack of presence in Bella's life...... Bella's mom really has no major part in her life when she moves to Forks except for emails and a few phone calls. As a mother, what are your thoughts on Bella and Renee's distant and some what hands off mother/daughter relationship?
Sarah: Yeah it’s weird...being a mother of two girls myself I found it very frustrating...I finally had to make peace with it and decided that Renee was a different mother than myself. I also have to remember that Bella was 17..and not 3..so by then there is a lot more independence.
SayWhatNews: In 'Twilight Saga: Eclipse', we finally get a look at the bond Bella and her mother have when the two share a very special moment on the patio when Renee gives Bella a gift during her visit. Do you feel this was a key moment for the two characters?
Sarah: Absolutely...I think the key to understanding their bond is that there is a mutual respect of personal and emotional space. Renee really does see Bella as an adult and an equal to her...that’s why she doesn’t crowd her.

Saoirse Ronan ("Hanna") is attached to star as protag Melanie Stryder, whose body is invaded by an alien named Wanderer, also to be played by Ronan. In the coming days, producers will begin testing actors for the pic's two male leads.
Liam Hemsworth ("The Hunger Games"), Kit Harington ("Game of Thrones"), Jai Courtney ("One Shot") and Max Irons ("Red Riding Hood") will test for the role of Jared, Melanie's boyfriend.
