Starz
The British are coming…yet again. Tonight, Starz unveils another dollop of
blood, sex and froth in the form of “Camelot,” a guilty pleasures in the same
vein as “Spartacus.” (Showtime is also debuting their own medieval melodrama,
“The Borgias” on Sunday). This Camelot interpretation covers the reign of King
Arthur starting with the sword in the stone. Starring in the lead is Jamie
Campbell Bower, who epitomizes the pretty Brit boy look established so perfectly
by earlier U.K. exports, Orlando Bloom and Robert Pattinson.
Now it’s time for those two though, to step aside (at least momentarily) and
let Bower have his share of the spotlight. In “Camelot,” his version of the
King, starting out at age 18, has a lot to learn, not to mention watch out for.
His sister, Morgan (former Bond girl Eva Green) is not happy she’s been bumped
as heir, and she’s willing to conjure up every baddie from the underworld to get
her back to her rightful seat on the throne.
Fortunately, Arthur’s got Merlin in
his camp (a superbly smarmy Joseph Fiennes) to guide him and protect him against
Morgan’s less than sisterly intentions. As mentioned before, this is Campbell’s
first turn in the #1 spot, yet you may have seen him before. In “Sweeney Todd”
he played the love interest of Johnny Depp’s beloved daughter, and later this
year he’ll be reprising his roles in both “Harry Potter” (as Gellert
Grindelwald) and “Twilight” (as Caius), not to mention playing the young Earl of
Oxford (aka, the purported real Shakespeare) in “Anonymous.” The 22 year old
Campbell took time out for a chat with Speakeasy.
